Will Robots Replace Humans?
Robots and artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to permeate our daily lives by 2025. This could have huge impacts on several business sectors, especially healthcare, customer service and logistics. AI is already responsible for breakthroughs in medical and climate research, not to mention self-driving cars
According to Pew Research, about half (48%) of professionals surveyed believe that robots and digital agents will replace a significant number of blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Their fear is that it will increase income inequality and create a mass of virtually unemployable people. The other half (52%) expect robotics and artificial intelligence to create more jobs than they take. The later believes that while artificial intelligence will replace humans, but human’s have the ingenuity to create new jobs, industries and new livelihoods — much like at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.
Robots are already all around us, whether they are automated machines that assemble our vehicles or virtual assistants that help us around the house using conversational interfaces. However, as we have seen, they are not currently suitable for all areas of life.
Robotics may also shape the future of medicine. Surgical robots can perform extremely precise surgeries, and with advances in AI, could eventually perform surgeries independently.
The ability of machines and robots to learn can give them an even more diverse range of applications. Future robots that can adapt to their surroundings, master new processes and change their behavior would be suitable for more complex and dynamic tasks. Ultimately, robots have the potential to improve our lives. In addition to offloading physically demanding or repetitive tasks, they may be able to improve health care, make transportation more efficient, and give us more freedom in our creative endeavors.
Although humanoid robots still remain largely in the realm of science fiction, robotic machines are all around us. These engineering feats already help us in many areas of our lives and could change the future for us.
Robots are the product of humans. We need to start looking at how we can improve technology-related skills while promoting distinctive human skills. Creativity, intuition, initiative, and critical thinking are human skills that are unlikely to translate to robots — at least not anytime soon. We should already be thinking about how we as employers and employees can use robots to augment our work.
Despite the many pros and cons, one thing is certain; those with skills in robotics will be in high demand in the future. Whether it’s creating, programming, or maintaining robots, there’s likely to be a job in robotics.
